How to dress your greyhound for the weather conditions

Greyhounds have little fat under their skin to insulate them from the heat and cold, which makes them more susceptible to feeling the effects of any extreme temperatures.

It can be difficult to know how to dress your greyhound for the weather conditions, particularly with the unpredictable weather we have been experiencing this year. Temperatures can range from 30+ degrees with 80% humidity one day, and seemingly drop to 17 degrees the following day.

As a general rule, if it’s cold enough for you to need a jacket or coat, your grey will need one too.

Here’s our guide on how to dress your greyhound for the weather condition:

●      15°C +: Your grey will not need any additional clothes for temperatures above 15°c. Although some dogs feel the cold more than others, it's important to read your pooches' cues, if their ears are cold or they show any signs of shivering then you may want to put a light coat or short sleeve t-shirt on them. If they are exercising, remove their coat while they warm up and hold off putting their coat back on until they have cooled down.

●      7-14°C: Will require a thicker coat or jumper for walks, it's advisable to keep them indoors when temperatures drop this low, and consider pyjamas and extra blankets at night.

●      Below 7°C: Greys can quickly experience hypothermia when temperatures drop below 7°C. Keep your grey indoors and rugged up with a thick coat or jumper as well as warm bedding. Thick, weather-resistant coats are also recommended for walks.

This is a general guide only and you should always read your greyhounds' cues to understand their needs. Here are some typical signs that indicate your pooch is cold and may need some additional layers:

●      Shaking or shivering

●      Hunched posture with a tucked tail

●      Curled into a tight ball during sleep (more than usual)

●      Reluctance to keep walking

●      Seeking shelter
