The answer can be complex and there are pros and cons to both. Generally speaking, dogs are social animals and enjoy the companionship of other dogs.
The most common reasons for people wanting a second dog include:

●      Providing companionship for their bored or destructive dog whilst they are not home
●      To ensure their dog has a buddy because they work long hours
●      To help their current dog with anxiety and become more relaxed around other dogs

HOWEVER, there are many considerations you should be aware of before taking the plunge and getting a second dog, as certain situations may exacerbate existing issues.

Reasons FOR a second dog

●      If you’ve had 2 dogs and one has passed away, your dog may be missing the companionship of a friend. It’s important that you allow your dog to grieve before introducing another pet into the home.
●      Your dog is social and enjoys the company of other pooches
●      You have both time and money to invest in raising 2 dogs. Time needs to be invested in walking, feeding and stimulating 2 dogs. It also will double your pet food expense and vet bills with 2 pooches in the home.

Reasons NOT to get a second dog

●      If you are not physically able to walk 2 dogs at the same time. This can be challenging, particularly if you have physical impairments.
●      If you work long hours or travel frequently for work, both dogs can become aggressive and destructive if they don’t receive an adequate amount of stimulation.
●      If budget is an issue, think carefully. Two dogs mean double the number of expenses, particularly with unexpected Vet bills.
●      If you are expecting a baby – do you have the time to manage both at this stage of life?
